Gordian III (Marcus Antonius Gordianus) was the 32nd Emperor of Roman Empire and was also the youngest, at 15 years of age, to have sole reign over the empire. Little is known about his life, but in 241 the Persians invaded Mesopotamia and Gordian married Sabinia Tranquillina. In 242 Gordian set out for the east to direct the Persian campaign in person and he was so successful that in 243 he drove them out of Mesopotamia. At about this time his father-in-law Timisitheus, the perfect of the praetorian guards, died and was succeeded by M. Julius Philippus. This ambitious man irritated the army against their emperor and Gordian was assassinated at Zeila, on the Euphrates, in Feb.244.
