  • Roman Empire Julia Domna 196-211 AD  Denarius   She was born the child of Julius Bassianus, a priest of Sol, and Soaemias and born at Emesa in Syria. Although of humble family her horoscope was such that she firmly believed that sometime or other she would become the wife of a king, and as a young woman she came to Rome. Septimius, who was addicted to astrology heard about her long before he had any hopes to becoming emperor, and after the death of his first wife married her about 173 AD, when Septimius became emperor he often consulted her on state matters and was frequently guided by her counsels. She had two sons Caracalla and Geta, When Septimius died she was treated with deference by Caracalla, and she was forced to witness the murder of Geta in her own arms, afterwards she succeeded in dissembling her grief, to secure the goodwill of her surviving son, who bestowed on her many honors, After Caracalla death she was ordered to leave, and committed suicide by refusing all nourishment.
